Recipe: Candy Cane Cookies

Summary: December 9 - A Cookie A Day Until Christmas!  This is one of those significant childhood memories that I wanted to give to my children. Every Christmas I looked forward to my mom making these cookies. I never fully appreciated how labor intensive they were. So, thanks, Mom! My mom even made them for the wedding reception of one of my sons, because they’re his favorite. Instead of red and white, she made them in blue and white – the wedding colors… we had to explain it a lot.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 – 2 drops Peppermint oil
  • Red food color

Instructions

  1. Combine dry ingredients.
  2. Cream sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla, peppermint oil and milk.
  3. Combine with dry ingredients.
  4. Color ½ of the dough with red food color. Typically, I will make a batch of white dough and then a batch to color, adding the food color in with the sugar/butter mixture.
  5. Roll 1” balls of each color cookie dough. Make small ropes of the balls. Lay them next to each other and starting in the middle, twist the two ropes together. Lay on the cookie sheet in the shape of a candy cane.
  6. Bake 10 minutes at 350°.

Lots of work, but too, too cute.
